On the upside, they open with a stern test opposing the Proteas. Success today could provide immediate impetus for England and justify the careful optimism of their pre-tournament chatter.

Pre-Tournament Momentum

An excellent win versus the Aussies in their last warm-up has increased that confidence, even if the personal contributions of Alice Capsey (88 not out) alongside Sarah Glenn (claiming 5/32) caused a small team-selection puzzle for Charlotte Edwards.

Edwards is known for her success, so there’s no danger of the team having modest ambitions. But from a distance they find themselves in a somewhat uncommon situation of having a very clear par for the tournament.

Competition Outlook

Falling short of the semis would be a minor shocker, despite the improvement among the traditional also-rans.
