Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation happened on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his broken nose section
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track track officials can be authorized to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is actively examining the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA
"During the third lap, track officials were notified and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy officials were rescinded and a double yellow flag was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened following that moment"
