Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's lawyer filed the response on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would try to have the proceedings dismissed for various causes including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was indicted soon after Donald Trump pressured his top legal official to proceed against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the judge they aimed to submit several petitions to dismiss the case before a trial, arguing the legal action was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully assigned to take over the legal matter.

Mr Comey's proceedings was first overseen by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from Donald Trump after his examination into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.

After listening to the court read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.

Background Context

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was terminated about a few months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the period, the director was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey sparked a backlash from Democrats when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege the former director lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the Senate by claiming he had not authorized someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to media organizations details about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

In a video James Comey posted to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused the former president of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for years that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

These allegations against the former director emerged after Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and others.
