During a latest trip to Japan's capital, former US President Trump together with Japan's recently elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi exchanged warm compliments and pledged to strengthen the currently robust bilateral relations.
Donald Trump commended Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ leader and congratulated her on assuming the role of the nation's first woman premier. During their talks at the capital's official venue, the former president voiced confidence that she would prove to be one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of Japan.
Takaichi, who is a close associate of late Prime Minister Abe, applauded Trump's efforts to address global disputes and according to sources pledged to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.
Both governments revealed a list of joint initiatives in sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, and rare earths. Japanese companies are exploring investments of up to $400 billion in the United States.
Furthermore, Tokyo had earlier pledged $550 billion in strategic US investments, loans, and assurances as part of an arrangement to secure exemption from Trump's tariffs.
These actions are seen as potentially reducing any upcoming demands from Trump for Japan to increase its defense expenditure. The prime minister addressed this by promising to accelerate plans to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP.
“Based on what I’ve heard from Shinzo and others, you are destined to be an outstanding prime minister,” Donald Trump told the prime minister. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he added.
This encounter underscores the continuing significance of the US-Japan partnership and paves the way for additional collaboration on economic, security, and diplomatic areas.
