Alan Partridge is in crisis! But then, who isn’t these days? In his last TV appearance, Alan suffered a public collapse while hosting the light magazine show This Time, ending the series quite literally locked out of the BBC. At the start of his new, self-produced project, the non-fiction piece How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), the broadcaster reveals he’s encountered further difficulties by passing out in front of a guest at an industry gathering for an agricultural firm. Hard moments, but such characters rebound: link personal issues to broader trends and try to develop a program from it.
How Are You? showcases the beloved persona in documentary style, probing widespread emotional struggles that he feels is worsening: “In old-fashioned language, it’s gone crazy!” The journey will see him experiment with religion, meet up with former classmates, and take a lot of restorative country walks, as well as confronting his recent past. The first installment leads to a tense yet relieving meeting with “Sidekick” Simon Denton (Tim Key), Alan’s former colleague on This Time and North Norfolk Digital radio, and as this new series goes on, hidden moments from his career emerge.
For Coogan and his long-term writing/directing collaborators, How Are You? marks a change of pace. While the previous show explored new ground, How Are You? frequently revisits old themes: as well as directly reviving old formats, it mirrors earlier faux-documentaries from the 2010s. And, as Alan’s private life bleeds into his investigations, it recalls his audio ventures. The Two Sides of Alan Partridge
It creates a slight challenge. We see two versions of Alan: Triumphant Alan (in prime roles) and Wilderness Alan (doesn’t), and although Wilderness Alan was the star of the faultless TV sitcom I’m Alan Partridge back in 1997, a more wistful Wilderness Alan has recently taken flight in books and audio projects. How Are You? places us inside the oasthouse and casts Katherine Kelly as Katrina, Alan’s wildly unsuitable paramour from the podcast. But that tragic tale – Alan is in denial about Katrina cheating on him with a pal and business owner – seems better suited to podcast pacing, enabling mental imagery to amplify laughs. Off-screen, the character feels more expansive: modern TV excels at pressuring the successful Alan and watching him implode, as happened on previous shows.
Comedy Through Flaws
Yet, these issues pale beside a key reality: whatever medium he inhabits, Partridge remains the funniest comic creation in Britain, and temporary versions still offer huge comedy than competing shows. How Are You? is produced and directed by Alan, as well as starring him, which highlights his talent for mistakes and bad choices. If explosive fruit edits symbolize struggles, it will be included, and he remains unchecked on misspeaking or the phrase “mental bealth henefits” in his voiceover. The brief pained expression he makes exiting sensing the scene went poorly consistently amuses, and the same goes for his transitional clips, highlighted by his awkward, caring expressions while drinking tea clumsily.
Visual and Emotional Highlights
Can anything top his skip-side groans? Absolutely not. Visually he’s a feast too, with an implausibly light hair color, and his 2025 wardrobe featuring mustard chinos, black-and-white pundit pumps, an arsenal of body warmers and excited response to fashion trends.
Plus, the subject matter here allows for the glimpses into Alan’s soul that emerged with the current writers. Repeatedly, the show achieves emotional depth, where his blindness exposes pain that briefly evokes strong feelings, until humor takes over and giggles follow. It succeeds because of enduring fandom: any version of Alan Partridge is always welcome back.
