According to a senior military official, the American armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military buildup.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
The administration has encountered growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to confirm a broader political aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the president “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current government.
