An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
